When do you need to book the registrar in Hungary?

In Hungary you file your intent to marry with the registrar, and the ceremony can take place at the earliest 30 days after filing. Dates can typically be booked up to 12 months ahead, so most couples file 4-6 months before the wedding.

This is guidance, not an official legal source - the registrar can grant exemptions and local practice varies.

Agree on the total budget and who contributes what
Draft the first version of the guest list - it drives the venue and the budget
Pick 2-3 candidate dates before you look at venues

Visit and book the venue - popular venues fill up 12-18 months ahead
Book the photographer and videographer - the sought-after ones book out first

9-12 months out - the big bookings

Choose the caterer or align with the venue kitchen, including a tasting
Book the band or DJ
Decide on and book the MC (ceremóniamester or vőfély)
Start the dress search - ordering and fittings take 4-8 months
Find a decorator and florist, ask for quotes

6-9 months out - the details

Design and order the invitations
Choose the cake, go for a tasting
Choose and order the groom's suit
Choose the wedding rings - engraving and sizing take time
Start planning the honeymoon, book flights and stays

4-6 months out - the official part

File your intent to marry with the registrar: a 30-day waiting period applies after filing, and dates can typically be booked up to 12 months ahead
Prepare the documents: ID, address card, birth certificate; for foreign citizens document assessment takes longer, start earlier
Ask your two witnesses (they must be adults) and brief parents and speakers
Finalise the menu and drinks package with the caterer
Arrange guest transport (shuttle between ceremony and venue)
Book the hair and makeup trial

2-4 months out - the guests

Send the invitations 8-12 weeks before the wedding, with an RSVP deadline
Set up online RSVP and track the responses
Put together the gift registry, if you want one
Start practising the first dance or take a class
Buy shoes and accessories, and start breaking the shoes in
Build the detailed day timeline and share it with every vendor

1-2 months out - locking it down

After the RSVP deadline, chase the guests who have not replied
Build the seating chart from the final headcount
Give the final headcount and dietary needs to the caterer
Final dress fitting and alterations
Review contracts and payment deadlines, settle instalments
Print place cards, table numbers and menu cards
Agree the order and length of the toasts with the MC

The final two weeks

Reconfirm times and locations with every vendor
Make a packing list for the big day (and the honeymoon)
Put together an emergency kit: sewing kit, stain remover, painkillers, chargers
Delegate a point person for vendors and problems on the day - not you two
Hand the rings to the witness or MC for safekeeping

After the wedding

Send thank-you cards or messages to your guests
If changing names, update your documents (ID, licence, bank cards, workplace)
Select photos with your photographer and share a set with the guests
Leave reviews for your vendors - it is the biggest help you can give them
Close the budget: compare the plan with what you actually spent
